NIAMS Director Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., was honored with the Paul G. Rogers Leadership Award by the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) for his efforts in health research policy and scientific progress for public health. Dr. Katz was presented the award on May 10, 2011, by NOF Chairman, the Honorable Daniel A. Mica.

The Honorable Daniel A. Mica (l) presents Dr. Stephen I. Katz with the 2011 Paul G. Rogers Leadership Award.

According to NOF President Robert R. Recker, M.D., Dr. Katz’s leadership at the NIAMS has resulted in "advances in scientific knowledge that provide a platform for research that at one time was unthinkable. The potential for individually-tailored prescriptions and community-targeted prevention strategies offers hope to those with, or at risk, for osteoporosis and those working to help them."

Named after the NOF’s late founding chairman, the Paul G. Rogers Leadership Award honors an individual who has made great strides in advancing osteoporosis as a critical public health issue. Mr. Rogers served in Congress for 24 years, eight of which were spent as Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment. Through an act of Congress in December 2000, the plaza in front of Building 1 at the NIH was designated the "Paul G. Rogers Plaza." There, a marker bears his widely quoted statement, "Without research, there is no hope."

Past recipients of the Paul G. Rogers Leadership Award include Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME), former Sen. Blanche L. Lincoln (D-AR), Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV) and Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX).

Dr. Katz has been Director of the NIAMS since August 1995, and is also a Senior Investigator in the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Katz received his M.D. degree cum laude from Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, and a Ph.D. degree in immunology from the University of London, England. In 1974, he joined the NIH as a Senior investigator in the Dermatology Branch of the NCI, becoming acting chief in 1977 and chief from 1980-2001.
