Tier 1: Core Protocol

Radiographic Studies

X-rays (non-fluoroscopic) of both knees, both hips, and right hand

  • Knee - non-fluoroscopic, flexed, standing radiographs
  • Hip - pelvic view
  • Hand - 3rd metacarpal joint of right hand

Magnetic Resonance Studies

Conventional MRI (1.5 Tesla) both knees (60 minutes scanning time)

  • Whole joint scoring system
  • Cartilage volume
  • Synovial fluid volume

Intervals (total of 5 scans per patient over 4 years) 
Baseline, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, and 4 years

Tier 2 (Optional/Additional Studies)

Radiographic Studies

Validation of fluoroscopic and non-fluoroscopic techniques for a single knee

Magnetic Resonance Studies 

Knee 

  • Cartilage T2
  • High-resolution 3D MRI
    • Trabecular measures
    • Includes X-ray and MRI every 6 months x 4 years

Hip

  • Total cartilage volume and whole organ scoring
  • Imaging intervals at baseline, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, and 4 years

Tier 3 (Optional/Additional Studies)

Radiographic Studies

  • Xrays of shoulder, spine and temporal mandibular joint
  • Microfocal knee Xray of subarticular bone texture
  • AP and oblique shoulder Xray
  • AP and lateral lumbar spine Xray
