2019 NIAMS Summer Students Share Their Inspiring Experiences
This past summer, the NIAMS Scientific Summer Student Program welcomed the next generation of budding scientists and physicians to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus. The program provided a training experience that both motivated and challenged the young students for their future careers. This year’s diverse group of interns came from different regions of the United States, and were selected to participate in this competitive program based on their schooling and their proposed future contributions to areas of biomedical research keyed to NIAMS mission areas.
The interns contributed to exciting biomedical research and participated in career development seminars, journal clubs, clinical shadowing and independent seminars with NIAMS scientific and clinical directors, among many other enriching activities. Message From the Acting Director on the New NIAMS Strategic Plan
The NIAMS is pleased to present its Fiscal Years 2020-2024 Strategic Plan. The fields that the NIAMS supports have seen major advances in recent years and are now poised for additional rapid progress. Therefore, the NIAMS Strategic Plan conveys both the tremendous potential of the current research trajectory and the Institute’s aspirational vision for how work over the next five years may lead to meaningful improvements in human health.

Clinical Trials in the Spotlight
This new NIAMS website page features clinical trials supported by the NIAMS. You can easily find studies that are currently recruiting by disease or condition, such as atopic dermatitis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and rheumatoid arthritis, among others. Updates are made as new studies get funded and begin recruitment, so check back regularly to find new trials. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) recently updated the eBook, “Pain: Considering Complementary Approaches.”
The downloadable PDF (10MB) provides an overview of complementary health approaches for pain, including acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, spinal manipulation, yoga and more.
NIH MedlinePlus Magazine Website Now Bilingual
NIH MedlinePlus Magazine has launched a new website in English and Spanish. Now you don’t have to wait for the print version to receive trusted health content. The online version of the magazine publishes articles on a continuous basis and features special content that will not appear in the print version.

NIH Funds $945 Million in Research To Tackle the National Opioid Crisis Through NIH HEAL Initiative
To reverse the opioid crisis that continues to grip the nation, the NIH has awarded $945 million in total fiscal year 2019 funding for grants, contracts and cooperative agreements across 41 states through the Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiativesm or NIH HEAL Initiativesm. The trans-NIH research effort aims to improve treatments for chronic pain, curb the rates of opioid use disorder and overdose and achieve long-term recovery from opioid addiction.
