Media Availability: A Clinical Perspective of Autoinflammatory Diseases
The science of autoinflammatory diseases has progressed rapidly since the term was first coined in the late 1990s in an effort to distinguish this distinct group of illnesses from the more well-defined autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Advances in genetic technologies have expanded the understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of autoinflammatory diseases and have broadened the field to include disorders that no longer fit within the original classification.

Soy Isoflavones Fail to Prevent Bone Loss
Researchers supported by NIAMS provided convincing evidence questioning the notion that soy isoflavone tablets can help preserve bone mineral density (BMD) in women after menopause. Their study, the longest ever to evaluate the effect of soy isoflavones on BMD, appeared recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Key HIV Macromolecule Structure Solved
Researchers at NIAMS and Oxford University have collaborated to determine the three-dimensional structure of Rev (regulator of virus), an essential regulatory macromolecule of HIV. Rev is a protein that escorts viral mRNA molecules out of the infected cell nucleus where they are synthesized into the cytoplasm where they are used to synthesize the building-blocks of a new generation of viral particles. If Rev is absent or is inhibited, an infection cannot proceed.

NIH Announces Genetic Testing Registry: Database to Fill Information Gaps and Serve as Research Resource
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it is creating a public database that researchers, consumers, health care providers and others can search for information submitted voluntarily by genetic test providers. The Genetic Testing Registry aims to enhance access to information about the availability, validity and usefulness of genetic tests.
