New NIH Web Site Offers Easy Access to Information on Bone Health
A new Web resource providing the general public with the latest science-based information on bone health and bone disease is now available through the NIAMS-operated National Institutes of Health (NIH) Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases ~ National Resource Center (NRC). In addition to a fresh new look, the site offers more ways to search for scientifically accurate bone health information, including by audience type, language, reading level and disease. Rare Gene Variants Associated With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes
Scientists funded by NIH, the Alliance for Lupus Research and Massachusetts General Hospital have discovered that rare variants of a gene that encodes the enzyme sialic acid acetylesterase (SIAE) are associated with several autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes. Their findings, published online in Nature, suggest that SIAE plays an important role in autoimmunity. They also highlight the promise that rare variant analysis holds for unraveling complex, multigene diseases.

NIH-Funded Researchers Make Progress Toward Regenerating Tissue to Replace Joints
A team of NIH-funded researchers has successfully regenerated rabbit joints using a cutting-edge process to form the joint inside the body, or in vivo. Regenerative in vivo procedures are performed by stimulating previously irreparable organs or tissues to heal themselves. In this study, bioscaffolds, or three-dimensional structures made of biocompatible and biodegradable materials in the shape of the tissue, were infused with a protein to promote growth of the rabbit joint.

After 40 Years, NIH-Supported Researchers Identify Possible New Treatment for Severe Vasculitis
Investigators have made a major advance in treating people with a severe form of vasculitis, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, a rare but devastating disease of blood vessels. In a six-month study, a new treatment strategy provided the same benefits as the current standard of care used for more than 40 years, but required less frequent treatments. Early results also suggest that patients with disease relapses' typically recurrences of fever, fatigue, kidney damage or bleeding in the lungs' respond better to the new regimen.

NIH Expands National Network for Transforming Clinical and Translational Research: Nine Institutions to Receive $255 Million Over Five Years to Help Scientists Bridge Laboratory Discoveries to Patient Treatments
Nine health research centers have received funds to develop ways to reduce the time it takes for clinical research to become treatments for patients. The funds were awarded as part of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards program, which is led by NIH’s National Center for Research Resources.
