NIAMS Director Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., died suddenly on December 20, 2018, at the age of 77.

He had directed the NIAMS since August 1995. A Senior Investigator in the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute until 2014, Dr. Katz was recognized as a leader in investigative dermatology and had trained a large number of outstanding immunodermatologists in the United States, Japan, Korea, and Europe.

He will be remembered as an outstanding scientist, administrator, and civil servant who was committed to excellence, transparency, integrity, and public trust.
